EBRD President Thomas Mirow praised the process of economic reform in Albania during a visit to the Bank’s Headquarters on 4 November by Albanian President Bamir Topi.
During their meeting in London, President Mirow welcomed the structural and institutional reforms that were being put in place in Albania, which would help prepare it for accession into the European Union and support its further integration within other Euro-Atlantic institutions. Reforms were also helping to further improve Albania’s image as an investment destination.
President Mirow noted the remarkable resilience of Albania's economy during the global financial crisis. However, he noted that significant institutional and economic challenges remained, and pledged that the EBRD would help the country to meet these challenges successfully. The EBRD’s current strategy for Albania focuses on the areas that are considered priorities by both the EBRD and the Albanian authorities: transport, energy, and the private sector.
The two Presidents agreed on the importance of further cooperation in developing the country's infrastructure, including upgrading national, regional and local road transport networks, energy security, regional linkages and cross-border projects with neighbouring countries. The EBRD has been active in Albania since 1992 and has played important role in its transition process. The Bank has achieved a cumulative business volume of €563 million for total project costs exceeding €1.8 billion.
