“The conclusion we can draw today is that the worst-case scenario - that of the country going bankrupt and becoming unable to meet its financial obligations - has been prevented,” Tadic said and pointed out that everything that the citizens had to go through during the crisis had to be endured for the sake of a better future. Serbian President and leader of the Democratic Party (DS) Boris Tadic stated on Saturday that a more visible growth in living standards can be expected in 2012.
At a session of the DS Main Board, Tadic assessed that the Serbian government could have achieved more, but that the most important achievement lies in the fact that thanks to the government's efforts, Serbia managed to escape the fate of many regional and European countries. “The conclusion we can draw today is that the worst-case scenario - that of the country going bankrupt and becoming unable to meet its financial obligations - has been prevented,” Tadic said and pointed out that everything that the citizens had to go through during the crisis had to be endured for the sake of a better future.
It is of utmost importance that Serbia does not overstep the limit of indebtedness, Tadic said and congratulated the government for preventing this from happening. “Overstepping the indebtedness limit would bring us short-lived benefits, but we would have to pay extortionate costs later on,” Tadic explained. According to Tadic, excessive indebtedness would boost popularity of the politicians in the leading coalition, but the burden of the economy's recovery from the crisis would pass on to the next generation. “I know that I will have to pay a steep political price for telling citizens the truth, but that is a price I am willing to pay,” Tadic stated.
