Strategic partnership between Serbia, Russia

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov announced yesterday that a declaration on a strategic partnership between the two countries will be signed next year. Speaking at a joint press conference with Lavrov in Moscow, Jeremic said that at yesterday's meeting they synchronised the text of the declaration, which will be signed by the Serbian and Russian presidents, Boris Tadic and Dmitri Medvedev. The declaration will most likely be signed next year during Tadic’s visit to Moscow, scheduled for the first half of 2011, Jeremic added.

The two officials agreed today that relations between Serbia and Russia are strong and that there are no open issues. One of the topics of the meeting was the linking of Russia’s energy capacities with industrial facilities in Serbia in order to improve exports from Serbia to third markets, the Minister explained. Lavrov noted that energy cooperation between Serbia and Russia has been developing intensively, including the cooperation on the South Stream project, affirming that the underground gas storage facility in Banatski Dvor will be opened early in 2011. Several Russian companies and their Serbian colleagues are negotiating the realisation of projects for the construction of new power plants, to the benefit of both countries, he added.

The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs underlined that today's talks confirmed close and friendly ties between the two countries, as well as cultural and spiritual closeness of the two peoples. Lavrov said that he spoke with Jeremic about bilateral relations between Serbia and Russia, the situation in the Balkans and the cooperation between the two countries on regional and international levels. He reiterated Russia's position that the only legal basis for resolving the Kosovo-Metohija issue is the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and that both the UN Security Council and the UN Mission in Kosovo must respect this document.

Moscow, as he said, supports the initiation of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina which will allow the two parties to find a comprehensive solution based on compromise. Speaking about the report of the Council of Europe rapporteur Dick Marti on human organ trading in Kosovo-Metohija and Albania, Jeremic highlighted that gruesome facts have been revealed and that the time has come for the civilised world to stop turning a blind eye to the horrifying situation in the Serbian province. The report best portrays what Kosovo is today and shows who is at the head of Kosovo institutions, he underlined, adding that Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Tachi cannot have a political future after being linked to organised crime in Marti’s report. Lavrov stressed that the information about possible implications of the current Kosovo leadership in crimes against humanity has greatly disturbed Russia.
