The Romanian documentary “The World According to Ion B.", about a homeless man who finds success as a contemporary artist, won the "Arts Programming" award on Monday at the 2010 International Emmys. The film, produced by HBO Romania and directed by Alexander Nanau, tells the story of Ion Barladeanu, who, after living on the streets of Bucharest for almost 20 years, becomes a renowned artist when his work is finally discovered.
Barladeanu was a homeless man living in a garbage-strewn alleyway in Bucharest when he was discovered by an art dealer three years ago. He landed his first art show at the age of sixty-two. After decades of toiling in obscurity, amassing thousands of pieces, Ion’s collages are now being curated and collected. His collages, which depict life in communist Romania, were displayed in 2009 in London, next to works by Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, and in 2010 at the Anne de Villepoix gallery in Paris.
“The World According to Ion B.” has been screened at a number of international film festivals. It won the 2010 Best Balkan Documentary Award at Dokufest in Kosovo.
