Energy sector workers called off a strike announced for this week on Monday after agreeing with Prime Minister Bourt Pahor that a compromise solution regarding their opposition to the planned restructuring of electricity distribution companies would be found as soon as possible. After the meeting, held as a last attempt to avert Tuesday's start of a general strike, trade union representative Franc Dolar and Economy Minister Darja Radic told the press that an active dialogue would established between the workers and the government.
"We will look for the kind of solutions that will benefit all partners participating in the energy sector," Radic said. The union agreed today to withdraw one of its four strike demands - the sacking of Janez Kopac as the head of the ministry's energy directorate. It still wants a stop to the restructuring, better social dialogue and a collective agreement on supplementary pension insurance.
The union had singled out Kopac as the architect of the restructuring plan under which the five majority state-owned distributors would be split into market and network divisions.
