Out of 700 million tons of cargo that passes through the Suez Canal annually, only about 10 percent ends up in Northern Adriatic ports, although they cut the transport time from Far East to Europe by five days compared with ports in the north of Europe.
The European Commission forecasts that the transport in Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and other countries in the region will grow by 50 percent by 2020 and Croatia has to prepare for this by investments in infrastructure in Rijeka and other ports, railways, roads and airports, minister of maritime affairs, transport and infrastructure Bozidar Kalmeta said in Opatija, opening the International Multidisciplinary Conference on the Sea, Transport and Logistics. The conference was organized by the Rijeka Port Authority and Faculty of Maritime Studies Rijeka.
Port Authority director Bojan Hlaca underlined the importance of the Rijeka Port for Croatia. By 2020, its share in Croatia’s GDP should be increased tenfold, to as much as 12.7 percent.
