Germany will provide an honest and fair judgment as the basis of its decision regarding Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen space, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel told a press conference in Sofia emerging from talks with Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov.
She stated that apart from technical criteria, Bulgaria would not be asked to comply with any political demands. “For us it is vital that there is no corruption in visa issuance coupled with compliance with the supremacy of the law”, she added. This range of issues has nothing to do with the problem of Roma (Gypsies).
Merkel was explicit that recently Bulgaria had seen progress in combating organized crime and corruption. “Important steps in this direction have been made”, she said.
In case in November you back us for Schengen, Bulgaria will not stop, but will instead double and treble its efforts in being a reliable EU outer border, which we actually are, Boyko Borissov said in turn. Talking to the press Angela Merkel highlighted the significance of infrastructure projects which in her view, contributed considerably to the development of the national economy by generating new jobs.
