Bulgaria could occupy a niche position in supplying organic produce to the rest of Europe, local experts say, after statistics showed significant growth in the market.
The number of local organic producers has grown more than 10-fold between 2003 to 2008, with 90 per cent of produce being exported abroad, according to data from Bioselena, a local non-government organisation working in organic agriculture.
Stoilko Apostolov, the director of Bioselena, told Balkan Insight: "The market for organic products has grown considerably over the last three years.”
Kamen Krastanov, a member of the newly established local Association of Organic Traders, agreed.
He said: “There has definitely been a rise.
"More and more people are becoming interested in organic products, as they want to have a healthier lifestyle.”
