The first official Kosovo election results from the December 12 poll, released by the Central Election Commission last night, show the Democratic Party of Kosovo well ahead in the race to form a new government. But the preliminary results have been immediately rejected by other parties, with one suggested the statistics had been manipulated.
According to the CEC, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo received 33.5 per cent of the vote, Democratic League of Kosovo 22.6, Vetevendosje 12.2 per cent, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo 10.8 per cent, New Kosovo Alliance 7.1 per cent, Democratic League of Dardania 3.3 per cent and Fryma e Re 2.2 per cent. Mimoza Kusari-Lila, candidate for prime minister with AKR, said that the December 12 election had been rigged: “We have a preliminary result with over 50 percent of ballots counted by our commissioners and we have different data from the CEC.” She added that the PDK’s celebration of victory was premature.
Serious concerns have been raised about turnout in two municipalities, the PDK strongholds of Skenderaj and Gllogovc, which were 94 and 86 per cent respectively. A host of international and local actors have called for an investigation into what one diplomat called “industrial scale” vote fixing. Arben Gashi, a candidate and senior member of the LDK, said the CEC’s results do not reflect the final outcome."These are partial results: LDK wins in Pristina and the percentage will change,’” he said.
