Albania's public television broadcaster RTSH said on Thursday that it is seeking China's help to overhaul its analogue broadcasting system into a digital one. RTSH's general manager Petrit Beci told the Shekulli daily that they had agreed in principle with a Chinese firm and were waiting for a group of experts who would define the exact map of RTSH's distribution.
"These experts will ultimately produce a clear project, which we shall hand over to the government. We hope we will get Chinese investment in this project," Beci added. Albania has been assigned eight digital frequencies in the new system of digital television broadcasting that will be mandatory in Europe by 2012 and RTSH will own two of those frequencies. Viewers might watch 24 channels on those two frequencies when the project is finished. The investment to buy a digital broadcasting system might cost up to 25 million euros, Beci said.
He said they had already started buying production-related equipment, but did not give a figure for the total purchase, saying it depended on the quality. "The production system can have a minimum (price), but it has no ceiling," Beci said. To digitalize the huge archive stored in celluloid will present a big challenge to the company and require extraordinary training of his staff, Beci said.
