Booming with Creativity, Slovenian Golden Drum International Advertising Festival and Media Meeting

The beginning of last month saw the 17th Golden Drum International Advertising Festival and Media Meeting. The four-day event with 1,000 participants was held in Portorož and offered the most important overview of the year’s advertising. The Golden Rose, the prestigious New European agency-of-the-year award went to DDB&CO from Turkey, presented by the president of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk.

The Golden Drum is one of the two largest European advertising festivals and one Slovenia’s rare successful and internationally acclaimed brands. It unites an enormous market from Portorož to Vladivostok and from Helsinki to Tel Aviv and is focused mainly to the so-called New Europe, although it is also well-recognized in the West.

The main theme of this year’s festival, which was opened by a speech of one of the best creative forces in the world, Sir John Hegarty, was “Reconstruction”. Almost 2,000 entries from 41 countries competed for awards, the most coming from Russia (255), Poland, Romania and Slovenia (132 entries). The 34 members of seven juries (all prominent in their field) rated the entries. Competition was held in nine groups (including film, radio, design and the most extensive press) and 61 categories, in which the standard silver, golden and grand prix awards were issued. For the first time, the organizers gave ten new “Brand Grand Prix” awards in ten product and service categories, regardless of the medium used. Also new was the advertising pentathlon – one entry could take part in five competitions and strive for five awards.
