Albanian telecommunications Union (ATU), an innovative provider of broadband network services in Albania and will be the owner of a large fiber optic network (fully operational within 2011) that can be considered as the telecommunications backbone of the Albania . The license for the construction and operation of this network has been granted to ATU by the Governmental authorities. ATU will provide wholesale capacity services to the domestic and international market based on the most efficient technologies while offering all forms of commercial arrangements. The main purpose of this fiber optic network construction is to interconnect all the large cities and to manage the growing volume of telecommunication traffic from and to Albania. Consisting of several routes, the aforementioned network will have a total length of approximately 700 km upon completion of phase one.
More precisely the fiber optic network of ATU will be constructed in two phases. The part of the network delivered during phase one, will connect Tirana to several major Albanian cities and to the borders of all neighboring countries.
